We believe that the field of physical therapy will continue to represent a challenging endeavor that will focus on the efficient delivery of a variety of health care services to a diverse population of consumers whose needs will include optimizing function, education, prevent and promotion of wellness. This requires professional involvement, community service, research and life-long learning.
We believe that physical therapy education must produce entry-level doctoral level graduates that are proficient in the foundational, clinical and behavioral sciences. The educational process must provide a fertile environment for critical thinking, self-inquiry, active learning, service learning and cultural sensitivity, with the modeling of responsible and ethical behavior. This requires collaborating with colleagues for the professional exchange of information.
We believe that the faculty must be ethical and competent role models for students through participating in clinical practice, research, university governance and professional activities. Faculty will be deeply committed to serving as student mentors to produce graduates who recognize the competent administration of patient care as a privilege and a critical service to society.

Selection of Clinical Education Sites
Clinical site selection and development of sites are the responsibility of the ACCE. Clinical sites are chosen on the basis of reputation, philosophy of clinical education, the type of facility compliance with APTA recommended standards, unique opportunities that can be offered to doctoral students, and the clinical expertise or experience of the clinical instructors.
Student Clinical site Assignments
Student assignment to the clinical site is accomplished by the ACCE with input provided by the student. Students are asked to submit their top 5 choices for clinical sites. The ACCE considers each student’s needs and future plans in choosing the best clinical site to facilitate the student’s professional development. Again, assignments are based on the available site deemed most appropriate in meeting the student’s educational and professional needs and not on proximity to Slippery Rock, the students’ permanent address or a friend’s or relative’s home.
Travel to Clinical Sites
It is beneficial for the students to have cars. However, car-pooling, it may be possible to arrange for local clinical rotations. Students must be prepared to travel out-of-town and possibly out of state for clinical rotation placements. The ACCE will make all clinical rotation assignments based on the educational needs of the student and not convenience for the student. Any expenses accrued during local or out-of-town affiliations are paid by the student. These include expenses such as travel, lodging, parking, meals and phone calls. Attempts will be made to aid students in finding housing for out-of-town affiliations by providing housing lists sent from the few clinical sites that send them to the program. However, obtaining housing is the responsibility of the student.
Student Health Fees
Medical coverage during the clinical rotations is included in the original student health fee. However, this does not include services provided by clinics or hospitals off-campus. For coverage while away at clinical sites or for services provided by the original student health fee, students may elect to purchase additional medical coverage under the student insurance health plan through the University. Alternatively, students may be covered by parental insurance policies or purchase health insurance independently from any health insurance carrier.

Slippery Rock University has received a Conservation Award from the Bartramian Audubon Society for establishing four Audubon wildlife sanctuaries since 2005. The sanctuaries, part of the University's green landscape and outdoor learning initiative, preserve 210 acres.
