"What is a Provost?" 
This is a question that has been asked by many individuals.

According to The Random House Dictionary of the English Language; The Unabridged Edition, © 1971:

pro·vost (prov' st, pr 'vst or, esp. in military usage pr' v). n.

1.  A person appointed to superintend or preside.

2.  An administrative officer in any of various colleges and universities who hold high rank and is concerned with the curriculum, faculty appointment, etc.
3.  The chief dignitary of a cathedral or collegiate church.
4. The steward or bailiff of a medieval manor.
5. A prison warden.
