Renovation Plans for Boozel Dining Hall
In response to the rising need of
students living in SRU's new Residential Suites, the SRU Council of
Trustees have approved plans for renovating and adding an addition
to Boozel Dining Hall. Plans have been drawn to use student dining
hall fees to raise the estimated $6.7 million for the project. Boozel
has been in service since 1969, and in its current location will
mostly likely become the main dining facility for students living on
campus. A new Boozel Dining Hall will open for the campus in
the Spring of 2009.
New
Student Union Initiative
In a recent
four-to-one vote, SRU students approved planning for a new Student
Union. The new facility will cost an estimated $43.7 million and
cover over 122,500 square-feet. It will include a 250-seat stadium
style movie theatre, ballroom and multi-purpose meeting room, space
for student clubs and organizations, student lounges and game rooms,
the SGA Bookstore, and a food court. The building will occupy the
space where Harner Hall and Bard Halls once stood. It is
estimated that the current Union has over 1,500 visitors a day, and
SRU hopes the new building will be yet another potential drawing
point for new students. Construction is expected to start sometime
in 2009.
Storm Harbor Equestrian Center
The
construction of the Storm Harbor Equestrian Center was just recently
completed. The Storm Harbor Equestrian Center will serve several
purposes. Primarily, the Center has been established to provide
personnel preparation in the equine facilitated riding certification
opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at
Slippery Rock University. Secondarily, through this state and
national equine teacher certification program, community residents
with disabilities will be provided the opportunity to benefit from
therapeutic horseback riding programs.
Future plans include housing the Slippery Rock University
Equestrian Riding Team who will also participate at the Center and
host competitive events for colleges and universities throughout
Pennsylvania. The Storm Harbor Equestrian Center will also host
special events as fund raisers and competitive events for
disability-specific groups.
