Parents and Family

Students making the transition into college for the first time have many new adjustments to make. This is also a time for parents and guardians to make some adjustments along with their children. Questions about almost every aspect of their new lives as college students can be raised. Even more questions if he or she decides to join a fraternity or sorority. Students who have already made the transition into college life still have adjustments to make. Living and working in new surrounding and with people with varied backgrounds always takes some adjustments. Returning students are also busy deciding career interests and which major to choose if still undecided. While their son or daughter is overcoming new challenges, parents must adjust also. Fraternities and sororities exist as a proven support network for your son or daughter as he or she starts this transition in life. The Greek experience can offer a scholastic support system, hands on experience in leading communities, managing budgets. Also with interacting with faculty administrators, discussions with alumni, and through educational programs, fraternities and sororities offer exposure to potential careers. Members of fraternities and sororities have the chance to give back to the community through service projects. Belonging to a Greek organization creates close friends who will cheer you on when you are successful and support you when times are tough.

STATEMENT ON UNRECOGNIZED ORGANIZATION

Being part of a fraternity or sorority can be one of the most rewarding experiences a student can have while at college. Unfortunately, there are some groups that are not affiliated with the university that utilize the enticement of this experience to recruit student members. We strongly discourage students from attending events or affiliating with any group that is not officially recognized by the university. Before joining any club or organization, please check the SRU CLUBS website to verify that the organization is officially recognized and operating with a university advisor.

We are aware of the following groups operating in the local area without university recognition or advisor support:
*Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority
*Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity
*Lambda Chi Alpha (or Lambda Chi Gentleman’s Club) Fraternity
*Phi Delta Omega (formerly, Phi Kappa Theta and Kappa Delta Rho fraternities)

All of these groups have lost their national and university recognition and are currently functioning without University support or oversight.

We encourage students to participate in recognized student organizations! Benefits of belonging to a recognized fraternity or sorority include: Participation in positive leadership opportunities, scholarship and excellence award recognition, access to university facilities, organizational management training and experience, local, regional and national conference opportunities, community service and philanthropic projects, participation in activities such as Homecoming, All-Campus Alcohol-Free Mix-Off and Greek Week. One of the most beneficial aspects of membership in a national fraternity or sorority is the affiliation with an organization that has thousands of other members all across the country, providing students with excellent networking opportunities for future jobs in a host of different disciplines.

If you should have any questions or concerns regarding student organizations, please contact the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership at 724-738-2092.
