Slippery Rock University Police advise the campus community that four alleged suspects in an off-campus robbery were arrested last evening.
The four suspects allegedly entered an off-campus apartment in the Ivy Apartment Complex Thursday evening and committed armed robbery. Individuals in the apartment at the time of the robbery were not harmed.
Pennsylvania State Police were called to investigate and based upon information received, requested SRU Police to assist. Following the incident, one of the victims came to campus and reported to SRU Police that two of the alleged suspects were at Rocky’s Grille. Police responded and arrested the two suspects. Based upon information from those suspects, police were able to apprehend the other two alleged suspects, one of whom had a weapon at the time of the arrest. The suspects are being arraigned on a number of charges.
“We are pleased that as result of good cooperation from the victims and the State Police, we were able to respond to and resolve this issue in a matter of hours,” said Windy Stafford, SRU assistant chief of police
“Campus safety is everyone’s responsibility. Students, faculty and staff need to be alert to their surroundings and report any suspicious activity to University Police at Ext. 3333,” Stafford said.
“This is an especially busy time of year with the holidays and the end of the semester fast approaching. Unfortunately, many people forget to be careful about their property and personal safety, leaving them especially vulnerable to theft and other crimes,” Stafford said.
To help keep you safe, police offer the following tips:
Personal safety
- Listen and act on your intuition. It’s better to be safe and risk a little embarrassment, than stay in an uncomfortable situation that may be unsafe.
- Have your keys (ID card) ready when approaching your car or building.
- Don’t talk about your vacation plans where strangers can overhear you.
- Don’t leave personal items unattended at the library, food courts or other public spaces.
- Be careful using outside ATMs at night or in unfamiliar surroundings.
- Tell someone where you’ll be and what time you’re supposed to return, or if you will be with someone you don’t know well.
- Don’t wear headphones while walking or jogging.
- Don’t walk alone. If you need a campus escort, call Ext. 3333
- Check your surroundings before getting out of your car. Check the rear seat before getting into your car.
- Never drive with less than one-quarter tank of gas.
Protect your room, apartment or home
- Never display gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway.
- Always lock doors, windows and garage doors when you leave, even if you are only going to be gone for a short period.
- Keep doors locked when you are at home.
- Use your peephole to see who is at your door before you open it.
Shop Safe:
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; instead pay with credit cards, check or RockDollar$
- Watch your credit card during transactions to make sure it is used to print only one transaction. Make sure the cashier returns the card to you.
- Park in a well-lit space and always lock your doors and windows.
- Hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
Watch out for Con Games and Frauds
- Give only to charities that are familiar to you.
- Ask to see identification when someone asks for a donation.
- Only make checks out to the organization, not an individual.
