Registration:  Please check in with us at the registration desk in the University Union and Watson Hall so we can provide you with the most up-to-date information and activities for the weekend. Registered guests will also receive a bookstore discount!  Stop by registration before you shop!

Campus Sponsored Events      Friday, September 12th

5:15pm: (Reservations Required) Pre-Theater Dinner, University Club
Prepare your senses for a journey of American inspired culinary delights. Our chefs will prepare a multi-course pre-theater dinner which is by reservation only at $24 per person. Please contact 724-738-2840 ext 101 for reservations. Seating times will begin at 5:15 pm with dinner to be served at 5:30pm.

7:30 p.m. Capitol Steps, Miller Auditorium
The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. They have been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS and can be heard on NPR. You are guaranteed to laugh, regardless of your party affiliation. Visit www.capsteps.com for more information about the troupe.

Tickets are reserved seats. Families and friends will be guaranteed seats if reservation is received by August 8. After that date they will be filled according to availability. There are no refunds. The Capitol Steps is one of a series of four programs that comprise the exciting SRU Performing Arts Series. Tickets ordered will be available at will-call one hour prior to curtain. We do not mail tickets home unless requested.

Students, family and visiting friends attending the event are invited to a reception after the show in the Russell Wright Alumni House. Members of the cast will be there to say hello. Please confirm your plans to join us at the reception when you place your ticket order.  Request for tickets can be mailed (see the Student Services mailing your received recently for order form) or call University Public Relations at 724-738-2091.

Sibling Stay Over, Residence Halls: Siblings, cousins, and younger friends may stay in the residence halls.  Young guests are invited to stay with their student overnight, Friday and/or Saturday. Ask your student to pick up a form from their Community Assistant.  Guest must be accompanied by a resident at all times.

9:30 am -10:30 am: Pastries with the President
Join Dr. Robert Smith for a continental breakfast in the University Union Lobby.  Chat informally with the President and others members of the faculty and staff.  Pick up additional information about activities and programs at the Family & Friends Information Table.

 

10:30 am- 2:30 pm: Antique Photos, University Union Lobby: Free to families! 

11:00 am -3:00pm: Brunch, Weisenfluh Dining Center
Enjoy pastries baked fresh before your eyes. Omelets made to order and chef carved entrees are a few of the many highlights you will encounter throughout your culinary feast. Cost is only $5.10 per person.

1:00 pm: Men’s Soccer vs. Gannon; Jim Egli Soccer Field (across for the football stadium)

2:00 pm -3:00 pm: Storm Harbor Equestrian Center Complex: Tour

4:00 pm: Alumni House Rededication Ceremony and Legacy Reception, Russel Wright Alumni House and Conference Center: All alumni are cordially invited to take part in the offcial rededication ceremony of the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center. Sponsored by the SRU Alumni Association, this ceremony will recognize those alumni who were a vital part of making this project a success. Current SRU parents who are also alumni will be re recognized as well.

 

4:30pm – Football Game Kick Off: Tail Gate Picnic, sponsored by AVI Food Systems
Free tickets to this event will be located at registration sites only.  Picnic will be located on the band practice field directly across from the football stadium.

6pm:  SRU Football vs. Kutztown, NKT Football Stadium
Reserved seating is available for $8.  General admission tickets are $6-adults, $2-child and may be purchased at the gate.  SRU students with ID’s are admitted free to the student section seating. 

 

9:30 pm: Game Show Mania! Sponsored by ARHS and AVI, Watson Hall Great Room: Come relax and enjoy the live entertainment and a complimentary Café as you wind down for the evening.  Open to all families and friends.

Community Sponsored Events Saturday, Sept. 13th

8:30 am: 5K Race/2 Mile Walk: Slippery Rock Area Parks and Recreation will host this annual run.  The run will start at the corner of Elm and W. Cooper Sts. And will proceed down W. Cooper St.  The 2 mile walk will start at the red benches in front of Memorial Park on Main St. and traverse through scenic Slippery Rock University.  Feel free to pre-register before August 22.  On site registration begins at 7:00am on event day.  Call 724-794-8181 for more details.

10:00 am – 11:00 am: Meet the Pastors Reception, Newman Center: Pastors from the area churches will be available to meet students and their families and provide information about their churches.

9:00am-noon: Farmer’s Market: Location TBA; this event is organized by the SRU Macosky Center.  Local growers and producers of homemade products will have their wares available.

10:00 am- 5:00 pm:  Slippery Rock Village Fest, Main Street and Gateway Park:: Main Street and Gateway Park will be closed to thru traffic and parking to provide space for over 100 booths of crafts, business displays, organizational fund raisers and unique food vendors. Park on campus and hop the shuttle to down town.

10:00 am- 2:00 pm: Environmental activities for Kids of All Ages:  164 S. Main Street: Presented by PA Center for Environmental Education (PCEE) and the Slippery Rock Public Library.  Interactive activities for kids of all ages, including story time!  Environmental resources to help live a “greener” life will also be available.

10:00 am- 5:00pm: Kid’s Corral: Gateway Park: Fun for all! Feature activities include: Ambush, Hoppy Horse Derby; Western Bounce; Western Slide; Human Bowling; Pan for Gold, Boom Blaster; Tiki Island Climbing Wall; Money Machine, Face Painting, Lollypop Prize Tree, Golf Challenge, Pet Rock Painting, Duck Pond and much more. 
(Kids’ Corral ticket prices are .75 each, 2/$1 or 12/$5 and some events are FREE!)

11:00 am: Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department Chicken Barbeque:  SR Fire Hall: Back by popular demand will be chicken on the grill in front of the fire hall; it’s a sell out every year!

3rd Annual Brew Fest: Sponsored by North Country Brewing: Nextier Bank Drive-In: The Brewery will host three sessions of beer and wine tasting of specially invited microbreweries.  Session One is from 11 am-1pm, Session Two is from 2pm to 4pm and Session Three is from 5pm-7pm.  Call North Country Brewing for more details: 724-794-2337.  (Must be 21 to enter area)

 

Rock the arc!  

Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Students’ family and friends are invited to partake in informal recreation activities and facilities at the ARC.  Take the opportunity to participate in a game of basketball, volleyball, badminton and ping-pong, or go swimming in the heated pool.  You may also enjoy the challenge of the 40ft. climbing wall.   Adult guest may also utilize the fitness center.  No matter your desire, Rock the ARC will be fun for all. (You will be required to sign-in at the front desk of the ARC upon entrance. You will receive a guest pass with updated times during registration.)

 

FYI!

Camping? SRU Camp Ground space is available for this weekend, free of charge! Spots are limited, first come first serve. Call Campus + Conferences at (724) 738-2027 for reservations.

Recipes from Home:  Dining Services will be featuring student favorite family recipes for lunch during the weekend, so if you are heading to the dining halls don’t forget to keep your eyes pealed for some down HOME cooking!  Who knows, that recipe might be yours!

Baskets of Fun: Silent Auction (Proceeds to benefit the SRU Family Connections/Family Weekend funding) stationed in the Union, the Baskets of Fun Silent Auction will include a wide variety of donated gift baskets highlighting many fun and fantastic SRU departments! 

Mother Knows Best…OK, Dad’s Too!  The SRU Family Connections Steering Committee is interested in your suggestions and/or feedback.  At any time during the weekend you can find a locked suggestion box at the Welcome Center Desk of the University Union.  Feel free to jot us note with a suggestion or comment about this or other future Family Connections programs.  We would love to hear from you.

“The Ultimate Gift”: Don’t forget to check out the student comment cards from our Welcome Weekend program about the “The Ultimate Gift”.  The display will be available to view throughout the day on Saturday the 13th, in the University Union Lobby, beginning with the Pastries with the President program.
