Team: Each team can play with a minimum of 1 players and a maximum of 2 players (Doubles) on the playing table. For Co-Rec teams, the number of male players may be equal to, or less than, but not greater than one more the number of female players. Teams must maintain these numbers for the entire game. The maximum number of players on the team roster is 2 participants. Equipment: Tables, Paddles, and Ping Pong Balls will be provided by the Intramural Office. If players wish to use their own equipment, they are more than welcome to do soRules: USA table tennis rules will be used with the following adaptations. These are found at www.usatt.org. Referee’s Authority: The referee has authority to rule promptly, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules. The referee’s decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the game. Protest Procedure: Verbal On Site - Protests may be made on eligibility and rule interpretation; never on a judgment call by officials. Only the Team Captain or designated game captain may file a protest. Rule and procedure protests must be filed at the time of the incident and before play resumes. The on-site supervisor will first attempt to handle the protest. If this ruling is not satisfactory to the Team Captain a written protest can be filed immediately after the activity with the Intramural on-site supervisor. If the protesting team wins the contest, the protest is automatically withdrawn. Written Protest - Must be presented to the Intramural Coordinator within 24 hours after the event. All protests will be given to the Intramural Coordinator for a ruling. Protest forms will be available at every contest. Scoring: A match is played best 2 of 3 games. For each game, the first team to reach 21 points wins that game, however a game must be won by at least a two point margin. A point is scored after each ball is put into play (not just when the server wins the point as in volleyball). The edges of the table are part of the legal table surface, but not the sides. Flow of the Match: Each player serves five points in a row and then switch server. Each volley will consist of alternating hits by each team mate (Doubles). If a score of 20-20 is reached in any game, then each server serves only one point and then the server is switched. After each game, the players switch side of the table. In the final game (ie 3rd game), the players switch side again after either team reaches 10 points. Legal Service: The ball must rest on an open hand palm. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so the ball first bounces on the server's side and then the opponent's side in their opposite “square.” After a player’s service is complete, teammates must switch sides. If the serve is legal except that it touches the net, it is called a let serve. Let serves are not scored and are reserved. Safety Concerns: All ARC Policies and Procedures will be followed during game play. |
