Team: Each team can play with a minimum of 8 players and a maximum of 10 players on the playing field. For Co-Rec teams, the number of male players may be equal to, or less than, but not greater than one more the number of female players. Teams must maintain these numbers for the entire game. The maximum number of players on the team roster is 15 participants. Equipment: Bats and game balls will be provided. Shoes must be worn. NO METAL SPIKES, DOUBLE WALL, TRIPLE WALL, OR TITANIUM BATS may be used. Rules: ASA softball rules shall apply to all games, except the following adaptations. Referee’s Authority: The referee has authority to rule promptly, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules. The referee’s decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the game. Protest Procedure: Verbal On Site - Protests may be made on eligibility and rule interpretation; never on a judgment call by officials. Only the Team Captain or designated game captain may file a protest. Rule and procedure protests must be filed at the time of the incident and before play resumes. The on-site supervisor will first attempt to handle the protest. If this ruling is not satisfactory to the Team Captain a written protest can be filed immediately after the activity with the Intramural on-site supervisor. If the protesting team wins the contest, the protest is automatically withdrawn. Written Protest - Must be presented to the Intramural Coordinator within 24 hours after the event. All protests will be given to the Intramural Coordinator for a ruling. Protest forms will be available at every contest. Inclement Weather: All Supervisors and Officials have the authority to postpone/cancel any event due to inclement weather. Inclement weather includes, but not limited to rain, lightning, etc. Playing Time: Games will consist of 7 innings, or 50 minutes. A new inning cannot begin after 50 minutes of play. Any inning started before the 50 minute time mit will be finished. If a game is called because of rain, darkness, etc., 4 complete innings will constitute a complete game. Mercy Rule: If a team is ahead by 15 runs after 3 complete innings, or 10 runs after 5 complete innings the game is over. The leading team will be awarded with a win. Players and Substitutes: A team may field a maximum of 10 players. Each team must have 8 players present to start or continue a game. Once the batting order has been set, it cannot be changed. Substitutions can be made at any time. Teams have the option to bat their fielders or all of their players present. Co-Rec Adaptations: A team must have a minimum of 4 females when numbers are below 10. If the team has 10 players present then there is a required 5 females. This rule also applies to forfeits. Free substitution rule. All substitutions are of the same sex, male for male and female for female. The batting order is alternating (male, female or female, male). If a male batter is walked (intentional or not), the next batter (a female), has the option of batting or taking a walk. If the female chooses to bat, the male will remain on first base. Pitching: The ball shall be delivered with perceptible arc of at least 6 feet from the ground and not more than 12 feet from the ground. Strike Zone: For each legally pitched ball touching any part of home plate or the mat will be declared a strike. Base Running: Base runner(s) may not leave their base until contact is made. There is no stealing. When the ball is in play and is overthrown out of play, one base shall be awarded to each base runner. When a ball is carried into dead ball territory, the ball is dead. All runners advance one base beyond the base they occupied at the time of the dead ball. Pinch runners are allowed only if the batter is injured. Pinch runners will be the last recorded out. Foul Balls: The batter is declared out if they hit a foul ball after having two strikes. Slide Rule: THIS IS A NON-CONTACT SPORT. If there is a play at any base where safety is of concern, players must slide. If a player does not slide when necessary, the runner is out. It is at the umpire’s discretion when to use the “slide rule.” Players must slide feet first. No head-first slides. Diving is permitted. If a player slides head-first, the runner is out. Collision Rule: When a defensive player has the ball and is waiting for the runner and the runner remains on their feet and deliberately, with great force, crashes into the defensive player, the runner is out. If the act is considered flagrant, the runner shall also be ejected from the game. |
