Outdoor Soccer

 

Team:  Each team can play with a minimum of 5 players and a maximum of 7 players on the playing field.  For Co-Rec teams, the number of male players may be equal to, or less than, but not greater than one more the number of female players.  Teams must maintain these numbers for the entire game.  The maximum number of players on the team roster is 12 participants.

Equipment:  Metal cleats are not allowed at any time!  Shin guards are strongly recommended.  Baseball caps and jewelry are prohibited.  Soccer balls and mesh jerseys will be provided.

Rules:  NCAA rules apply except for the following adaptations.

Referee’s Authority:  The referee has authority to rule promptly, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules.  The referee’s decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the game.

Protest Procedure:  Verbal On Site - Protests may be made on eligibility and rule interpretation; never on a judgment call by officials.  Only the Team Captain or designated game captain may file a protest.  Rule and procedure protests must be filed at the time of the incident and before play resumes.  The on-site supervisor will first attempt to handle the protest. If this ruling is not satisfactory to the Team Captain a written protest can be filed immediately after the activity with the Intramural on-site supervisor.  If the protesting team wins the contest, the protest is automatically withdrawn.  Written Protest - Must be presented to the Intramural Coordinator within 24 hours after the event.  All protests will be given to the Intramural Coordinator for a ruling.  Protest forms will be available at every contest.

Inclement Weather:  All Supervisors and Officials have the authority to postpone/cancel any event due to inclement weather.  Inclement weather includes, but not limited to rain, lightning, etc.

Field of Play: The field of play will be a rectangle approximately 80 yards by 45 yards. Each penalty area will be a rectangle 35 yards (wide) by 25 yards.  The penalty spot is on the penalty area line directly in front of the goal.  Each team shall designate to the officials a field captain. The captain will speak for the team in all dealings with the officials.

Duration of the Game: The game consists of two 20minute halves with a 5 minute intermission.  There are no time-outs. The clock will stop only for goals, penalty shots and at the official's discretion.

 Rule Adaptations: THIS IS A NON-CONTACT SPORT!  Slide tackling is not permitted - a yellow card and direct free kick shall result. There is no offsides.  Kickoffs may be taken in any direction.

Substitutions: Substitutions will be made on any stoppage of play, whistles, throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner-kicks.  Free substitution rules apply.

Major Fouls: slide tackling, kicking, tripping, jumping at, charging at, striking, holding, pushing, and intentional hand ball. RESULT: Direct Kick.

Minor Fouls: playing in a dangerous manner, intentional obstruction, unsportsmanlike conduct and unintentional hand balls.  RESULT: Indirect Kick

 Yellow Card (caution) results from:

  • Is guilty of unsporting behavior
  • Shows dissent by word or action
  • Persistently infringes the rules of the game
  • Delays the restart of play
  • Fails to respect the required distance when play is restarted with a corner kick or free kick
  • Any player receiving two yellow cards in a game will result in an automatic ejection and suspension for the next game.

Red Card (sending off) results from:

  • Is guilty of serious foul play
  • Is guilty of violent conduct
  • Spits at an opponent or any other person
  • Denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within their own penalty area).
  • Denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offense punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick.
  • Uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
  • Receives a second caution in the same match
  • Any player receiving a red card in a game will result in an automatic ejection and suspension for the next game.

Goalkeeper:

  • A goalkeeper, inside their own penalty box takes more than six seconds while controlling the ball with their hands before releasing it from their possession.  RESULT: Indirect Kick
  • Goalkeepers are not allowed to play the ball with their hands when the ball is served back to them by foot or throw-in from their teammates. RESULT: Indirect Kick
  • A goalkeeper can play the ball with their hands when the ball is served back to them via header from a teammate.

Ties: During the regular season there will be no overtime period.  During the playoffs, ties will be broken by 2 five minute over time periods which are NOT Sudden Death.  If the tie is not broken during those periods, a penalty shoot out (5 shots) will occur.  If still tied, it will go to a sudden death rotating shoot out.  The 6 players on the field are the only ones eligible to take the first 5 shots. 

Supervisory Mercy Rule (applies to all divisions):  Supervisors have the authority to call a game due to large disparity between teams and becomes an unsafe and/or unsportsmanlike situation to either team.

Safety Concerns:  THIS IS A NON-CONTACT SPORT!  Soft bottom spikes are required.  Metal cleats are hazardous and are not permitted.  Shin guards and mouthpieces are strongly recommended to prevent injury.
