Team: Each team can play with a minimum of 5 players and a maximum of 7 players on the playing field. For Co-Rec teams, the number of male players may be equal to, or less than, but not greater than one more the number of female players. Teams must maintain these numbers for the entire game. The maximum number of players on the team roster is 10 participants. Equipment: Dodge balls will be provided by the ARC. Rules: Capture and release rules will apply. Referee’s Authority: The referee has authority to rule promptly, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules. The referee’s decisions are final in all matters pertaining to the game. Protest Procedure: Verbal On Site - Protests may be made on eligibility and rule interpretation; never on a judgment call by officials. Only the Team Captain or designated game captain may file a protest. Rule and procedure protests must be filed at the time of the incident and before play resumes. The on-site supervisor will first attempt to handle the protest. If this ruling is not satisfactory to the Team Captain a written protest can be filed immediately after the activity with the Intramural on-site supervisor. If the protesting team wins the contest, the protest is automatically withdrawn. Written Protest - Must be presented to the Intramural Coordinator within 24 hours after the event. All protests will be given to the Intramural Coordinator for a ruling. Protest forms will be available at every The Court: The game will be played on an enclosed basketball court (Gym B). The dividing line for teams will be the division line (half court) of the basketball court, with the line remaining neutral. The Game: The game will begin by placing 6 balls on the division line. The participants will then line up behind the endlines of the basketball court. The officials start the game by blowing the whistle. Players run to the division line to retrieve balls, players may straddle the line when retrieving the ball for one time only. After the initial “charge,” players may not touch/cross the division line. A player may not run to the other side of the court to get a ball, but a player may reach over the division line to get a ball as long as no part of his/her body touches the other side. Any ball considered out of play will be set on the division line and made available to either team. The game is won if all players on a team are in jail or whoever has the most people not in jail at the end of the six-minute time limit. With one minute remaining the following rules will be implemented: No player that is out will be allowed back into the game and the division line will move to the respective three-quarters line. Matches consist of a best of 3 game series. The championship game will best of 5 series. Games will be 6 minutes periods. Overtime: If the game is tied at the end of regulation, an overtime period of 1 minute will be played. During overtime, elimination rules apply. The Rules: The object of dodgeball is to throw the ball at a playing opponent and strike them anywhere between the shoulders and feet. When throwing the ball at the other team, a player may NOT:
The Jail: A person struck by a legally thrown and is “out,” must go to jail. While going to or from jail the player must raise his/her hand above their head to indicate that they are out of play. Also, a person who throws a ball at an opponent and the ball is caught before it touches the ground, he/she must go to jail. Jail is located on the opponent’s side of the court, out of bounds on the baseline extended, with the lines being outside the jail. A player may get out of jail if the following occurs; catch a ball thrown by a teammate without the player’s feet leaving the jail area. If a player crosses/touches the “jail” line while attempting to catch a ball, the player must stay in jail and forfeit the ball to the opposing team. If a player is released, that player may take the ball and return to his/her team’s side of the court. This player may not throw or be thrown at until the player crosses the ¾ line on his/her side of the court. If a ball rolls into the jail area, a player may not throw it to a teammate on the other side of the court. They must SOFTLY kick it out of the jail to the opposing team. If a player in jail throws a ball to his/her team, he/she will go directly to the penalty box and is out for the remainder of the game. The same applies if a player kicks the ball violently to the opposing team while in jail. Additional Rules: A player may only hold onto a ball for a time limit of 5 seconds. After this point, the official will blow the whistle and the player will be forced to roll the ball to the other side of the court. If at anytime any player violently throws or kicks the ball, that player will be ejected from the game, and possibly from the tournament. Any other rulings in questioned will be resolved by the referee and/or tournament supervisor. |
