Dr. James "Gym" McFarland Award

McFarland Award Winner

Dr. McFarland served Slippery Rock University from 1974-2001 as a Professor of Parks and Recreation, men's and women's tennis coach and as Campus Recreation's first Intramural Sports coordinator. In 2003 'Gym" was inducted into the Rock's Athletic Hall of Fame.

"Gym" served as a mentor to many of the original members of Slippery Rock University’s Campus Recreation team. His wit and wisdom helped to guide the development of campus recreation and the ARC as it opening 2000. "Gym's" competitive spirit and zest for life, combined with his recreation background, made him not only a successful teacher and coach, but a friend to all. We appreciate all "Gym" did for us and THE ROCK!  He will be greatly missed.

In his honor, the Dr. James “Gym” McFarland Award was initiated during the 2006-2007 academic year.  Annually the award will be presented to the years outstanding Campus Recreation Student Employee.  The qualifications for this award are:

  1. Current Campus Recreation student employee who has been employed for a minimum of two semesters.
  2. Current or previous Campus Recreation All Star.
  3. Participation in Campus Recreation activities.
  4. Minimum GPA of 2.8.
  5. Best exhibits the characteristics of leadership, participation, enthusiasm and teamwork reflective of Dr. McFarland
